UK motorists are confused by a number of motorway driving rules which could cause problems on the roads. Up until 2018 motorists would not have motorway drivings lessons or experience until they have passed the test. This is similarly causing issues down the line as new research found that one in three Brits doesn’t understand motorway signs. What’s more, these motorists added that the motorway message signs are not useful or have poor or inaccurate information. A new study, from CarShop, found the gaps in the knowledge of British motorists.
Nearly one in four drivers (23 per cent) have ignored the red X sign on a smart motorway and over a third (37 per cent) of drivers have admitted to exceeding the 70mph speed limit on motorways as they are unsure about the rules of the road.
Fast lane and slow lane
A large proportion of motorists will use the terms slow lane and fast lane when talking about a motorway.
The lefthand lane is commonly called the slow lane while the outer right lane is described as the fast line.
However, both of these terms are incorrect and these lanes don’t exist.
The left-hand lane should be used for normal driving and the other two lanes should only be used for overtaking.
